The History of Hamilton County Memorial Hall

A Timeless Cincinnati Landmark Making Memories Since 1908

1907-postcard-webI just found this lovely postcard from 1907. Great view of Elm Street from Cincinnati Washington Park! Hamilton Country Memorial Hall would be just off view on the left and in 1907 would be is some stage of construction. Memorial Hall was completed in 1908.

Note the two statue on each side of the pond. Those are currently directly across Elm from Memorial Hall.

One of the statue is of Colonel Robert L. McCook who led the Ohio 9th infantry in the Civil War. This group of volunteers were entirely made up of German immigrants living in “Over the Rhine”.

Colonel McCook did not lead the 9th Ohio during the entire Civil war. He was murdered in Alabama in 1862, shot down in cold blood after taken from his ambulance, he was unarmed. The 9th itself wasn’t all from over the Rhine. Germans flocked to the city to be part of this historical regiment, including about 30 From Louisville. A majority was from Over the Rhine, but not all.

I don’t believe Memorial Hall would be in this postcard or even out of view. Memorial Hall was built in 1908. The buildings you see from right to left: Music Hall, a saloon (brick building which in 1921 became Alms Dormitory for the College of Music, Schmidlapp Dormitory for the College of Music (white building built 1902), and a brick row house which was torn down to build Memorial Hall.

    1. The builders of Memorial Hall broke ground in March of 1905 and laid the corner stone in December 1905. The 1907 postcard depicts the street scene as it was sometime before its publishing in 1907. Thanks for identifying the buildings along Elm Street and your opinion that Memorial Hall construction would not have been started when the scene was created.
